Much is said of Venus and Mars in romance. But what about in the workplace? Effective gender communications can be a surprising means to more energy, shared workload, increased vitality and respect.

Good leadership is about inspiring trust. Whether clients or colleagues, women and men can build trust with one another by understanding some key, gender-specific ways we communicate.

Women: Be specific with men. Women, are you feeling spent and tired? Do you overwork because men don't understand what you need? Consider that it is not that they don't want to help. Men are capable. But they need you to make your requests specific and direct. Men also need you to need some help. If you let go and let men provide--anything--not only might you be pleasantly surprised at what men have to offer, but you'll marvel at how rested you feel. The myth that YOU have to do it all will be dissolved.

Men: Ask for details. Men, do you feel like your potential is unmet and you can't contribute? If your female colleague is being too general for you to understand, don't pretend to know what she is talking about. This will set you both up for failure. Ask for specifics. For example, does she want that report in email or hard copy? Does she want a fiscal or market review?

Women, tell men that you feel taken care of when that is true. Reduce some of your invulnerability. It will restore the energetic balance between you.

It is important for us to feel like we are each contributing. If we realize the ways we cut off the vitality of our colleagues in communication, we can be aware of how to allow that vitality flow again, just by getting out of our own innate ways.

I recently had the privilege to take a course called "Celebrating Men, Satisfying Women." It is the impetus behind this month's newsletter as it has deeply affected my professional and personal life. Subtle shifts in my behavior are bringing about change everywhere, and I want to share it with all the women that I know. Please visit PaxPrograms.
