One of my clients recently weighed the outcomes of our work together. "There are many things we changed here," she said of her creative agency, "and some that have remained in tact. Those things that have remained the same, that's what I call our DNA-the part of our culture that will never change, and I might add, I don't want them to."

Do you know your company's corporate DNA-the things you couldn't or wouldn't alter? Knowing who your company is and what you don't want to shift is imperative to staying solid in an ever-changing market, flooded with new ideas. It is also imperative when hiring onto existing teams, building the biology so to speak.

That said, understanding what you DO want to shift in your company's culture, or what you are willing to shift, is vital.

Practice:
Make three columns on a piece of paper and title them:
I. DNA (or, Things I Love About My Company Even If They Are Quirky)
II. Willing to shift
III. Out with the old

Double-check your list with someone you trust-a business coach or partner, a trusted colleague. Then, get to work on cleaning up your system. If you don't know how to shift out the old, ask for help. (This may be an item in Column II!)

Be open to every possibility. Just because you think something is hardwired into your company's DNA doesn't mean your team can't grow from it. If you are the leader, chances are you get to do the company wiring, so choose well.

If you'd like to know more about how my client's company overhaul left her and her agency in great shape, DNA in tact, give a jingle. We'd love to hear from you.

Warmly,
Regina
